Software and Wetware: Taking a short hiatus
Wow, I can’t believe it’s been 24 whole days since my last post! It’s been quite a productive time, and one full of surprises.
- My Desktop Linux at Facebook talk happened, and the recorded video is now available in WebM and MP4 formats. Linux Unplugged and Phoronix had some nice coverage (thanks Stefano for noticing these!)
- The changes I’m involved in for Fedora 34, enabling Btrfs transparent compression and enabling systemd’s oomd userspace out-of-memory killer reached feature completion. Many thanks from the change owners especially to Chris Murphy, Neal Gompa, and the Anaconda developers (Jiří, Martin, Vendula, and Vojtěch) for all their feedback and assistance!
- For EPEL Packaging we’re close to allowing branching only for allowlisted branches. This will help the maintenance of packages many RHEL and CentOS users need, since the primary maintainer might not want to support EPEL, or allow the EPEL maintainers to commit to the Fedora branches, but previously without full commit access a maintainer cannot request the package to be branched for new EL releases
The other major development is the launch of Michel 2.01 into the world, with only minor hiccups, ahead of schedule! Most of the credit for this, of course, belongs to my lovely wife; I’m really blessed to have them both in my life. I’ll be only sporadically online for the next few weeks, dedicating myself to a deep dive of this novel Baby Operating System :D
Most of my work and Change Proposal responsibilities have been handed off, and hopefully I have enough time in between diaper changes to fix all the FTBFSes for my packages … but so far it’s been a refreshing and lovely change from the world of VC meetings!
